Children

Early orthodontic assessment in children can be beneficial in identifying and addressing developing issues. Treatment during growth phases can help guide jaw development and tooth eruption, potentially reducing the need for more complex interventions later. The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic consultation by age 7 to monitor skeletal and dental development. Interceptive treatments at this stage can aid in healthy facial growth and, in some cases, improve conditions such as paediatric sleep apnoea by expanding narrow airways. Habits, like thumb sucking and prolonged pacifier, use can also be managed using fixed appliances.

We see patients of all ages, so if you’re unsure whether your child may need orthodontic treatment, feel free to call us for a commitment-free consultation.

Reasons why your child may need orthodontics

  • Whether your child’s teeth seem too close together or have noticeable gaps, it’s all about how the jaw and teeth are growing. Crowding and spacing issues are common and can usually be addressed easily with the right timing and plan.

  • If your child’s top teeth sit too far forward over their bottom teeth, or they struggle to close their mouth fully, this could be a sign of an overbite or overjet. It’s worth checking early, as these issues can affect eating, speech, and jaw development.

  • If your child’s top teeth bite inside their bottom teeth, particularly on one side, this could be a crossbite. Left untreated, it can lead to uneven jaw growth and wear on the teeth — but it’s often simple to treat early on.

  • If adult teeth aren’t coming through when expected, or baby teeth are sticking around too long, it could mean an impacted tooth is stuck beneath the surface. An orthodontist can assess the situation and guide the tooth into place if needed.

  • If your child snores, mouth breathes, or seems tired even after a full night’s sleep, it might be more than just restlessness. Sleep apnoea in kids is often linked to airway issues that can be supported through early orthodontic care.

  • Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting and prolonged dummy use may seem harmless, but they can start to impact how teeth and jaws develop. Catching these habits early can help avoid longer-term orthodontic problems.

  • Clear aligners offer a discreet and flexible option for teens and adults. They are removable, easy to clean, and suitable for a wide range of orthodontic concerns, from mild crowding to more complex bite issues.

  • Braces remain one of the most effective tools for precise tooth movement. We offer both traditional metal and clear ceramic braces to accommodate aesthetic preferences without compromising on results.

  • Palatal expanders are used to widen the upper jaw, often in children or growing teens, to create space and improve the bite. In some cases, expansion is recommended prior to braces or aligner treatment to ensure stable long-term outcomes.

  • For adults and older teens with significant jaw discrepancies that cannot be corrected with braces alone, orthognathic surgery may be recommended. This involves a combined approach between your orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to realign the jaws for improved function and facial harmony.
